Accounting software is either too simple to be useful or too complex to learn. Flowbooks wants accounting that small businesses can actually use.
QuickBooks feels like spreadsheets with buttons. Wave is free but limited. Xero is powerful but overwhelming. The accounting software market is a mess of products that force small businesses to choose between simplicity and power. Flowbooks' vision is different: create software that handles complex accounting operations while feeling as intuitive as a messaging app. The challenge is building sophisticated financial logic (multi-currency, tax automation, reconciliation, reporting) wrapped in an interface that doesn't require an accounting degree. 'We want bookkeepers to love us and business owners to not fear us,' Alex said.
They're not just building features — they're solving real problems we deal with every single day.
Flowbooks Team
, Flowbooks
We're building accounting software that handles complexity invisibly while feeling effortless to use.
Using Next.js for the frontend with a robust Node.js backend, we're creating a platform where common tasks (invoicing, expense tracking, reconciliation) happen with minimal clicks, while advanced features (multi-entity accounting, custom reports, API integrations) are there when you need them. We're implementing smart automation — bank feed categorization using ML, recurring invoice scheduling, automatic tax calculations, and proactive error detection that catches issues before they become problems. The architecture uses PostgreSQL for transactional integrity and Redis for real-time updates. We're building comprehensive API access so Flowbooks integrates with existing business tools. Currently in beta with selected accounting firms testing the platform.
Beta partners are already calling it 'the accounting software we wished existed.'
Flowbooks is currently in closed beta with 50 accounting firms and 200+ small businesses. Early feedback highlights the speed — 'tasks that took 10 clicks now take 2.' Accountants appreciate the depth — 'finally, software that doesn't dumb down accounting.' The automated reconciliation feature alone saves users an average of 5 hours per month. We're iterating based on real-world usage patterns, adding features requested by beta users, and preparing for public launch. This is a product being built in partnership with the people who will use it daily.
