But making AI feel personal and trustworthy while handling real financial data required deep technical integration — connecting to banks, analyzing spending, offering cash advances, building credit — all wrapped in a chat interface that doesn't feel robotic. The challenge was making complex finance feel simple and, dare we say, fun.

Using React Native for cross-platform mobile development, we created a chat-first experience where users interact with Cleo's AI personality to manage their entire financial life. The app connects to bank accounts through Plaid for secure transaction analysis, uses natural language processing to understand user questions, and responds with personalized financial advice — sometimes brutally honest, always helpful. We implemented automated savings features (Autosave, Round Up, Smart Save), cash advance capabilities up to $250 without credit checks, and credit building tools through a secured card. The AI backend analyzes spending patterns, identifies bill payments, suggests custom budgets, and even creates spending challenges. Every interaction was designed to feel conversational, not transactional.
